While most people who receive prescription medication from their doctor take it directly as prescribed, there is an alarming rate of prescription drug abuse in the United States and it is only getting worse. Prescription drug abuse is defined as using prescription medication for nonmedical purposes. In fact, a staggering 48 million people in the United States over the age of 12 report having engaged in prescription drug abuse; a figure that represents about 20% of the population in the U.S. The most commonly abused classes of prescription medications include opioid narcotics, central nervous system depressants, and stimulants. With the right therapeutic interventions, lifestyle changes, and support, most people who become addicted to prescription drugs are able to kick the habit and learn the skills necessary to lead a sober, happy life.
At our hospital for prescription drug addiction, we’ve had decades of experience treating adolescents and adults who have chemical dependency problems. How to Help a Loved One
Helping a loved one get treatment for prescription drug addiction
If you have a loved one who is addicted to prescription drugs, you may not know what to do. Maybe it was easier to ignore the problem, pretending it didn’t exist until you couldn’t any longer. Now that you’re loved one is addicted to drugs, you may not know where to turn and who to turn to in order to help your loved one. Here are some tips for helping your loved one into treatment for prescription drug abuse:
Educate yourself: Addiction can be tremendously challenging to understand for those who have never battled it. Addiction is a disease that must be managed permanently – there are no quick fixes. Take the time to read information about addiction, attend support groups, or talk to your doctor. There are a number of resources available that can help you learn more about this disease.
Offer love: Addiction is a scary disease – both for you and your loved one. Make sure that your loved one knows that you love him or her no matter what. He or she may be so steeped in guilt and shame that the mere offer of love can make a world of difference.
Take lead: It can be hard for an addict to reach out and seek help for their addiction on their own. Offer to make appointments with his or her doctor, tour rehab facilities, and learn the ways in which addiction is best treated.
Why Consider Treatment
Why consider treatment for prescription drug addiction at Oasis Behavioral Health Hospital in Chandler, AZ
Addiction is a painful disease that causes harm to nearly every aspect of an addict’s life. Addiction to prescription pills is particularly dangerous as many people believe these drugs are much safer than street drugs because they are provided by a physician. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Taking any drug at higher doses or consuming with other drugs or alcohol can quickly lead to serious overdose – even death. The sooner treatment begins, the better the outcomes will be for the addict in recovery.
Years of addiction research has shown that an inpatient treatment center or residential treatment center is the best way to help an addict begin down the path of sobriety. Through an inpatient setting, clients are able to focus entirely upon the psychological aspects of addiction and learn ways to prevent relapse. In addition, many addicts struggle with co-occurring mental health disorders and can jump-start their recovery from both co-occurring disorders and addiction at the same time.

Types of Treatment
Types of prescription drug addiction treatment offered at Oasis Behavioral Health Hospital in Chandler, AZ
When our clients are first admitted in Chandler, AZ, they undergo a thorough evaluation process that allows our multidisciplinary treatment team to assess all of his or her needs so that we can create a plan of care for his or her stay with us. Our hospital for prescription drug addiction offers several levels of care based upon the client’s needs. We offer acute inpatient care to stabilize clients between the ages of 11 and 17 as well as adults age 18 and older and help them determine the next best steps in their recovery. We also offer a residential treatment center for children and teens between the ages of 11 and 17, which serves to treat clients for chemical dependency, behavioral problems, and emotional challenges. Each program offers a variety of scientifically-validated treatment approaches worked into the individualized treatment plan of each client.
Treatment approaches for our acute inpatient center may include:
Medication management: While there are no specific medications that treat addiction, many of our clients require medication to treat co-occurring disorders or other challenges. All decisions about medication will be based upon the findings of the treatment team.
Group therapy: Our group-focused inpatient treatment center has helped countless adolescents and adults who come to us struggling with addiction and mental health disorders. We’ve learned through our decades of experience that using group therapy is one of the most valuable ways for our clients to work together in a therapeutic setting and learn the skills needed to maintain a life of sobriety.
Family therapy: As addiction is a family disease, our inpatient clients can expect at least one family therapy session to address the ways in which addiction has impacted the family unit. We also encourage loved ones and family members of those in either of our programs to attend educational sessions held each Monday night.
Treatment approaches for our residential treatment center (RTC) may include:
Medication management: There are currently no drugs on the market to treat addiction, but many of our chemically dependent clients may learn throughout our assessment process that they have a co-occurring mental health disorder. Many co-occurring disorders do require medication management, which will be carefully administered and evaluated by the treatment team.
Daily school: Each adolescent in our residential treatment center will attend school Monday through Friday, three hours per day. We offer Oasis Recovery School, which is fully-accredited and provides individualized education plans for each client administered by specially-trained teachers. We work hard to make sure each client is able to maintain his or her current educational status, make up lost credits, and work toward graduating on time.
Individual therapy: Once each week, every client in our residential treatment center will work with his or her therapist to address the problems addiction has caused in his or her life, understand more about co-occurring disorders, and process the challenges they face.
Family therapy: Our residential treatment clients will receive family sessions at least once every two weeks. Family sessions will focus upon the ways in which addiction has strained family bonds, provide resources for loved ones, and allow family to see the progress his or her child has made. Additionally, we encourage all family members to attend our educational sessions every Monday night.
Group therapy: At our hospital for prescription drug abuse, our residential treatment center is primarily group-based, which allows clients to bond with one another and work together to process challenges, learn new ways of coping, and prevent relapse.
At our hospital for prescription drug addiction, we offer a number of experiential programs designed to help our clients during their recovery. These may include:
