Helping a Loved One
Helping a loved one get treatment for depression
If your loved one is trying to cope with depression, you may feel at a loss as to how to help him or her get through this challenging time. Your own emotions may be all over the place – you may feel frustrated, sad, angry, or guilty, which further complicates matters. If your loved one has depression, there are some ways you can help him or her seek the treatment he or she needs to begin the journey to recovery. Here are some ways you can help:
Be understanding: Depression is a disease that requires constant treatment and monitoring to remain stable. It can be very frustrating to see your loved one refuse options for help, so try and be understanding, yet persistent, as you guide him or her into treatment.
Be helpful: Offer to help your loved one with routine chores, attend doctor’s appointments, and assure your loved one that you will support him or her throughout the whole treatment and recovery process. Make certain, though, when you offer your help, you’re actually willing to follow through with it.
Encourage treatment: As many people who are depressed do not have the motivation to seek treatment, assist your loved one by locating professionals and treatment centers for depression in your area. Remind your loved one that he or she doesn’t have to feel this way forever – there are many wonderful treatment options available.
Why Consider Treatment
Why consider treatment for depression at Oasis Behavioral Health Hospital in Chandler, AZ
An individual facing depression probably feels alone in the world, like no one can understand their constant feelings of sadness and worthlessness. They may find it hard to complete even the simplest of tasks, function properly in school or at work, and find themselves completely drained of energy most – if not all – of the time, no matter how much they sleep. Additionally, they may even begin to feel as though the only way they can escape the emotional pain is suicide.
Based upon the severity of your depression, there are several treatment options that have been proven to be highly successful at teaching the skills needed to manage depression. Acute inpatient and residential treatment programs have a long-standing track record of helping people who are depressed learn to cope with their symptoms and adjust medications to therapeutic levels. Children and adults can benefit from the intensive care of an acute or residential treatment center that incorporates many aspects of care into a highly-structured, supportive environment.

Types of Treatment
Types of depression treatment offered at Oasis Behavioral Health Hospital in Chandler, AZ
Our center for depression provides a comprehensive evaluation process for each person who comes to us for help, which will allow us to appropriately diagnose and develop an individualized treatment plan that meets all of the client’s needs. We offer a spectrum of care for our clients, including an acute inpatient program for adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17 and adults aged 18 and older. Our inpatient treatment approach aims to stabilize current crises and allow our clients to safely transition into their next phase of treatment. Our hospital also offers a residential treatment center (RTC) for adolescents between the ages of 11 and 17 who are facing emotional, behavioral, and substance abuse challenges. Our depression treatment has been scientifically-validated and empirically-supported through our years in the mental health field and generally involves a combination of therapeutic techniques along with medication. Both our acute inpatient and RTC programs provide an array of therapeutic techniques designed to help our clients successfully recover from depression.
Treatment approaches for our acute inpatient program may include:
Medication management: Many individuals diagnosed with depression are prescribed and helped by antidepressant medications, however usage and monitoring of medication efficacy will be determined by your treatment team.
Group therapy: Our inpatient program is group-focused, so many groups are held each day for our clients covering a wide range of topics designed to assist your recovery. We’ve found that the support of other people experiencing similar struggles is an invaluable part of the treatment process for depression. Topics may include adult education opportunities, vocational development, skills of daily living, sexuality, recovery, medication compliance, and relapse prevention.
Family therapy is an important component of our inpatient program as it allows family members and loved ones to come together to discuss depression, the treatments, and ways in which loved ones can assist you during your recovery. Our hospital for depression also provides family education each Monday night for family of those in one of our treatment programs.
Treatment approaches for our residential treatment program (RTC):
Medication: Medication for depression in the children and teens in our RTC program will be closely monitored for efficacy, side effects, and the dosage changed or eliminated as needed.
Daily school: All children and teens in our RTC attend our school Monday through Friday, three hours each day. Our fully-accredited on-campus school offers individualized education plans to work to ensure each child or teen is able to catch up on lost credits – and even graduate – on time.
Individual therapy: Once each week, each client in our RTC will spend private time working with a therapist to help discuss some of the challenges of living with depression, develop coping skills, and learn ways to deal with stress and prevent relapse.
Family therapy: Our treatment center for depression offers family sessions a minimum of twice a month and allows our clients to work with their families to learn more about depression, treatment methods, and ways loved ones can help their teen after discharge. We also encourage family members to attend educational sessions held each Monday night.
Group therapy: We find that group therapy is a wonderful way for clients to bond with one another while receiving information invaluable to their recovery. We offer multiple groups each day, including process groups, goal-setting groups, coping skills groups, and substance abuse groups for teens in our substance abuse program.
In addition to traditional therapeutic approaches, our hospital for depression offers a number of experiential programs, which may include:
- Gym
- Art
- Outside time
- Talking circles
- Bible study
- Daily recreation.
